Yellow Perch Poised to Make Run

Summary


Area anglers eagerly are awaiting the arrival of spawning yellow perch schools, but as of this morning the usual hangouts have not shown much. However, boaters in the upper tidal Patuxent River, as well as tidal Potomac feeder creeks like the Wicomico, Aquia, Potomac, Nanjemoy, Mattawoman and Occoquan, are finding some action with perch that are staging and waiting for the right time to start their run.

Maryland biologists say a yellow perch wants the water temperatures to be between 46 and 50 before it gets the urge to deposit its roe in the uppermost portions of the tidal tributaries. We found water temperatures in the Charles County creeks to be in the 40-degree range Tuesday. A little warmer weather would help.
