ABC News announced yesterday that Elizabeth Vargas and Bob Woodruff will co-anchor "World News Tonight" beginning Jan. 3, ending a lengthy quest to replace veteran newsman Peter Jennings, who ended his career at the network in April and died of lung cancer four months later.

With the change, ABC has abandoned the tradition of a single authority figure on camera, promising a lively newscast augmented with Internet updates, live portions for West Coast audiences and other features meant to compete with 24-hour channels - or at least lend that impression.
