Violent crime in the District is being fueled by long-standing and loose-knit gangs known as crews embedded in pockets of the city and shooting rivals out of revenge, police officials say.
Assistant Chief Diane Groomes of the Metropolitan Police Department says the crews are composed of mostly black members and are embedded in the Columbia Heights section of the city. She also said that since Oct. 1, crews have committed 11 shootings and fired at least 150 rounds just in the 700 block of Hobart Street in Columbia Heights.See the full content of this document
