US Airways posted its first quarterly profit without government assistance since before the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the Arlington carrier announced yesterday.

Although the $34 million pretax profit for the second quarter is relatively small for the nation's seventh-largest airline, corporate officials said it shows their "transformation plan" is making progress.
