Summary
As a current employee and former volunteer with the "wasteful" Peace Corps, I took great offense at some of the comments in Roger Kaplan's review of Josh Swiller's book "The Unheard: A Memoir of Deafness and Africa" ("Digging wells in Zambia," Books, Dec. 30).
Though neither I nor many of the nearly 200,000 returned Peace Corps volunteers can claim to have "won the battle of development" during our service, it is insulting to those of us who spent two years of our lives dedicated to public service in a Third World country to be referred to as "upper-middle-class Americans' bored children, who have nothing better to do than go slumming in Africa while claiming to promote development."See the full content of this document
