Anacostia residents yesterday said placing thousands of slot machines in their historic neighborhood would attract more crime and erode efforts to revitalize Southeast.

"You're dealing with a community that's already devastated, and now you want to bring more problems," said Anthony Muhammad, chairman of the Advisory Neighborhood Commission that represents the site where promoters of offshore gambling want to place as many as 3,500 slot machines. "You're not trying to help; you're trying to destroy it."
