Summary
After twice contributing to its $155 million-plus opening weekend and having had a week to let my thoughts settle, I have one realization about "The Dark Knight" ("Gotham City's war on terror," Show, July 18): I have never seen a character like the late, great, Heath Ledger's Joker.
He is frightening in a way no villain has ever been, as what is truly petrifying about the Joker is that he has no reasons for what he does. He does not kill for money or materials. He has no past. There is no specific incident that we, the audience, can point to as the moment he changed from civilized human being to monster. Perhaps he has always been that way, which becomes the truly scary part. Perhaps nothing has turned him the way he is. Perhaps in the world there is such a thing as pure evil. Evil that cannot be swayed, changed or defeated. He is anything but a cartoon villain, and he is not hiding behind his makeup but wears it as the star of his own sick and twisted show. All in all, he is just a man who understands, perhaps better than most of us, that passion in anything you do is more important than anything else.See the full content of this document
