Politicians Will Pay

Summary

Tuesday's editorial "A serious approach," about the immigration problem, is excellent. "Among a broad cross-section of the public, new data suggest that: by a 3-1 margin, voters believe that illegals weaken the economy; by a margin of nearly 6-1, they believe that the government is not doing enough on border security; and by a margin of nearly 3-1, they believe that illegal immigrants should be prosecuted and deported for being in the United States illegally," the editorial states. I found this to be interesting because it suggests that there is massive opposition among Americans to illegal immigration.

Another question that begs to be asked is: With so much opposition, why do the administration and Congress continue to push this bill? One almost would think that the opinion of the American people is no longer heard on Capitol Hill and falls on deaf ears at the White House. The last time I looked, the Senate and House of Representatives were supposed to be, in fact, representatives of the people and thereby responsible to the people. They were not elected to ignore the people. If this inability to listen continues, another 1994, when the people removed from office those who did not listen to them, will be in the making.
