Petraeus Will Regret Taking Afghan Command

Summary


It is puzzling to me why Gen. David H. Petraeus, who was Central Command chief, would agree to a demotion to take over as commander of military forces in Afghanistan, a war in which the United States is faring badly and is likely to lose ("McChrystal resigns Afghan command," Page 1, Thursday).

Maybe he just likes challenges. He turned around a seemingly hopeless situation in Iraq into a promising situation and hopes to work the same magic in Afghanistan.
