Summary


Like physics, politics possesses certain universal axioms. The legislative equivalent to Newton's third law (that's Isaac, not Gingrich) "every action has an equal and opposite reaction" will play out in the House of Representatives over the next few months as legislative leaders in both parties experiment with new roles.

Today, the House will vote along party lines and elect Rep. Nancy Pelosi of California as the first women speaker of the House and Rep. John Boehner of Ohio will assume the role of minority leader. While this first vote of the 110th Congress produces more pomp than substance, how the House will execute its business this year in style and substance remains a mystery. And actions by one leader will no doubt force application of Newton's law.
