Summary


Contrary to Rep. Jane Harman's distorted and incorrect perception, Pakistan is not only fully capable of overcoming its difficulties and internal and external challenges, but is also well on track in terms of socio-economic progress, as well as democratic transition ("Unfailing friend or failing state?" Op-Ed, Tuesday).

Mrs. Harman is right that the year 2007 was quite turbulent and full of challenging events for the Pakistani nation and the state, culminating in the tragic assassination of one of our most popular leaders, Benazir Bhutto. However, she is not right in placing everything on the shoulders of President Pervez Musharraf. She is also not right in alleging that the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) had lost control of its "network." The ISI is a highly disciplined agency, which has proved its credentials time and again - whether it is the context of its domestic security obligations or collaboration with foreign friends and allies, notably the United States - to deal effectively with the common security threats and challenges.
