No New Jobs, Just Deficits

Summary


Wesley Pruden's opinion piece "Looking for change in unlikely places" (Nation, Tuesday) got this old Washington veteran to thinking about many things, but here I list two: First, with regard to the so-called "stimulus" bill, I'm reminded of what President Reagan said in his first inaugural address, that "government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem." On behalf of senior citizens aligned under the 60 Plus Association banner, let me say more government spending is not the way to improve our sluggish economy.

Second, seniors tell me they are afraid of what Mr. Pruden described as "Nancy Pelosi and her San Francisco Democrats, with an assist from her sidekick Harry Reid, [using] the bailout to remake America into the liberal utopia they've been dreaming of."
