A jubilant Gerald E. Connolly, a Democrat who handily won his re- election bid for chairman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, appeared on television throwing pre-emptive threats to future Republican candidates in what might safely be dubbed the "New Dominion." Step out lightly, if you dare, Mr. Connolly warned any Republican politicians even thinking about throwing their red hats into what is now unmistakably a purple political arena.

However, when the senior U.S. senator from this once-solidly Republican stronghold publicly berates his party for what he called its predictable losses in Tuesday's statewide General Assembly elections, his dire warning should give the Virginia Republican Party reason to pause and rethink their intractable posture.
