Summary


The city of Bowie occupies 16 square miles approximately 12 miles from the District. A mix of residential, retail and office development fills the area, which was once a rural community. According to the city government's Web site, www.cityof bowie.org, Bowie had 53,660 residents in 2003.

Though today's home buyers may be most interested in the amenities found at Bowie Town Center, the area also has historical sites.

New Amenities Balance Historic Past

The Belair Mansion, built in 1745, has been restored. Visitors can observe the art and furnishings of earlier residents.

The Belair Stable Museum, the oldest continually operating horse farm in the United States until it closed in 1957, also is open to visitors.

The Bowie Railroad Station and Huntington Museum, built in 1872, also has been restored to offer visitors a glimpse at the catalyst for the growth of Bowie.
