Montevina, Terra D'oro Zinfandel, Amador County, 2002, $17

Summary

This big, bold zinfandel hails from gold-rush country in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Once the precious metal had been mined, settlers and immigrants began farming the hillsides, and the region is home to some of the oldest continuously producing vineyards in California - many dating to the 19th century.

These old vineyards are planted mostly in zinfandel, and good Amador County zins display a distinctive character. They offer heady aromas of fruit and spice and a core of multilayered plum, prune and dark berry flavors. Unlike younger, more monolithic examples of the varietal, they impress as much for their finesse as their power.
