Summary
I proudly voted for former South Dakota Sen. George McGovern in 1972 ("Iraq, Vietnam and McGovernism," Editorial, Friday.) He was and still is an American hero who would have been a great president. When he was just in his early 20s, Mr. McGovern flew 35 bomber missions over Nazi-occupied Europe, earning a Distinguished Flying Cross for bravery under fire. He experienced first-hand the horrors of combat.
In his early 20s, President Bush's service in the Texas Air National Guard kept him from having to fly warplanes over Vietnam. If Mr. Bush had served in Vietnam, he might be a wiser and better commander in chief today. A history major in college, he never learned the lessons of Vietnam. If he had, he would never have invaded and occupied Iraq. It is wrong and arrogant to think America can use its military to force democracy on another nation.See the full content of this document
