Kennedy, Chappaquiddick and Coverup

Summary

Sen. Edward M. Kennedy's latest rant is against the CIA destruction of interrogation tapes that netted intelligence on al Qaeda ("Destroyed tapes raise hackles," Nation, Dec. 8). The technique used to elicit information is referred to as waterboarding. According to several Web sites, the senator claims, "Those tapes were not shown to Congress. They were not shown to any court. They were not shown to the bipartisan 9/11 Commission. Instead, they were destroyed. What would cause the CIA to take this action? The answer is obvious - cover-up. The agency was desperate to cover up damning evidence of their practices."

In 1969, Mr. Kennedy and Mary Jo Kopechne were in an automobile that he drove off Dike Bridge on Chappaquiddick Island in Massachusetts. Mr. Kennedy escaped from the automobile, but Miss Kopechne didn't. Statements regarding rescue attempts suggest that Mr. Kennedy was quite aware that Miss Kopechne's life was in peril and that immediate action was in order. Had Mr. Kennedy reported the accident in an expeditious manner rather than delaying, Miss Kopechne might have been rescued.
