Democratic and Republican presidential candidates, locked in tight contests in which early polling favorites lost their advantages, yesterday scrambled to secure last-minute undecided voters for tonight's first electoral fight in the 2008 White House campaign.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, who could score an amazing first-place finish despite being dramatically outspent here, told Iowa voters to validate his nice-guy-finishes-first strategy, Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois told voters to break from business-as- usual politics in Washington, and Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York told voters to elect her to undo the policies of President Bush.
