Government Does Not Make Us Rich

Summary

Scott S. Powell is exactly right about the folly of relying on the government to deliver the nation from recession ("'The Road to Serfdom' revisited," Opinion, Thursday). Americans need to keep in mind this important point, which I think crystallizes Mr. Powell's argument against government intervention to address the recession: If the government were capable of ending recessions by its efforts, then it would also be capable of preventing recessions in the first place, and thus there would be no recessions. As both history and today's circumstances conclusively prove, government is not capable of either such thing.

Government cannot create prosperity. The best that government can do, and the aim to which it should direct its efforts, is to create the conditions under which individuals can prosper. As the history of America proves, the way government does this is by promoting and maintaining individual liberty through limited constitutional means. It is individual liberty - not government - that is the engine of prosperity.
