Broad Media Spectrum Offered

Summary

It is unsettling to witness a palpably intelligent individual such as Tony Blankley sink to parroting puerile and unfounded right- wing talking points ("Moronic Media," Op-Ed, Wednesday). Mr. Blankley resorts to the increasingly tiresome dodge of mewling about a perceived "liberal media bias." He goes on to bemoan political cable shows peopled exclusively by "liberal pundits, liberal anchors, liberal guest historians, liberal weather guys and gals, liberal news you can use chicks, and liberal political 'strategists.' " According to Mr. Blankley, conservative voices are being silenced by the cable networks.

Reality, however, reveals an altogether different circumstance. In the past 48 hours, I have been watching the Democratic National Convention while switching randomly from cable channel to cable channel. On MSNBC (the right's current favorite whipping boy for supposed bias) I have been treated to the musings of senior McCain strategist Nicole Wallace, Republican consultant Mike Murphy, conservative pundit Tucker Carlson, Republican political analyst Joe Watkins, failed Republican presidential candidates Mitt Romney and Rudolph W. Giuliani and conservative commentator Pat Buchanan. CNN has offered the wisdom of conservative talk-radio host Michael Reagan; Rep. Marsha Blackburn, Tennessee Republican; conservative pundit Ben Stein; McCain campaign spokesman Tucker Bounds; and the ubiquitous Mr. Giuliani. Fox News viewers have been treated to the insights of Mr. Romney, former White House deputy chief of staff Karl Rove (on at least three separate occasions), conservative radio personality Laura Ingraham and, hitting for the cycle, Mr. Giuliani - and these are only the instances I have witnessed personally.
