Summary
I am writing to applaud David Crary's Associated Press article "More rights urged for birth mothers" (Web site, Nov. 19). This social issue has been swept under the rug by welfare agencies that are anxious to complete adoptions as quickly as possible in order to receive bonus adoption funds given by the Department of Health and Human Services. It is a silent tragedy that state welfare agencies are selling children and cutting their biological ties in order to get money to support their bureaucracy and themselves.
Nancy Verrier, author of "Primal Wound, Understanding the Adopted Child," is a clinical psychologist who studied more than 30 adopted children and found that all of them suffered from the "primal wound." Ms. Verrier also reviewed the research of David Chamberlain, a child psychologist and author of "The Mind of Your Newborn Baby." Mr. Chamberlain has found that the bonding of a child begins when the fetus is within the womb. At odds with the "old school" idea that a child does not begin bonding with the caregiver until several months after birth, Mr. Chamberlain's research shows that hour-old infants are fully developed and show valid signs that they recognize the difference between nurses, their mother, father and other relatives.See the full content of this document
