Summary
In his Commentary piece "Moral equivalent of a Parkinson's patient?" (Commentary, Sunday), Stephen L. Mikochik contends that destroying human embryos to cure disabling conditions may lead to killing other "'marginal' humans, like those in a persistent vegetative state, to spare their families or free funds for those thought more deserving."
This "slippery slope" argument preys on fears of "A Brave New World" and ignores reality. Families often can't get doctors and nurses to carry out the instructions of a living will. Physician- assisted suicide and mercy killings are considered criminal acts, regardless of the patient's expressed desire. How can those so intent on protecting the unborn and the never-to-be born have so little compassion for the "living," who have no quality of life and are facing a long, drawn out, painful death?See the full content of this document
