Sound System Bedevils 'Flute' ; Still, Wolf Trap's Strong Cast; Works Magic with Mozart

Summary


The Washington area is never far from another performance of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's popular opera "Die Zauberfloete" - better known here as "The Magic Flute." This time around, it was the Wolf Trap Opera Company's turn to stage the work, borrowing minimalist sets from the New York City Opera for two performances this past weekend at the Filene Center in Vienna.

What's not to like in "The Magic Flute?" In the work's roughly three-hour running time we get an autocratic wizard moonlighting as a high priest, an evil queen who fires off a bucketful of high Fs, a hero with the sophistication of Forrest Gump, terrifying ordeals that happen offstage, a parade of funny animals and loads of Masonic symbolism.
