Later this month, the open-wheel racing season will begin, and for the first time in years there is a genuine reason to be excited.

That's because the Indy Racing League and Champ Car have, after years of talks, finally decided to merge and end the ugly split that has confused fans and sponsors and burdened the sport for more than a decade. Under the terms of the merger, the Indy Racing League basically will take over all the assets of Champ Car and provide incoming teams with free cars and engines. It will operate as a single league in 2008, beginning with the race from Homestead-Miami Speedway on March 29.
