Agency Sees 'Significant Progress' On Border

U.S. Customs and Border Protection says it has made "significant progress" in guarding the nation against terrorists, aliens, smugglers and other threats, disputing a report last week that inadequate staffing, insufficient training, low morale and high attrition rates had "seriously impacted" the agency.

"Through targeted operations, increases in staffing and training, additional infrastructure and better technology, and the support of the president and Congress, CBP's front-line personnel were better equipped in fiscal 2007 than any period in the nation's history," CBP spokesman Michael Friel said.
