MARK ZUCKERMAN: Ideally, yes. But it's not mandatory. In a perfect world, the MVP always would come from a playoff team. But sometimes a player from a noncontender is just head-and-shoulders better than everyone else. That's the way I felt last year about Albert Pujols. And at the moment, that's how I feel about Joe Mauer, my likely choice for AL MVP even though the Twins are on the fringe of the pennant race.
